M.Sc. Scholarship

Motivation Letter [Scholarship Offered]

The burden of diseases has been increased associated with infectious and non-infectious causes. The magnitude and severity of these diseases is high especially in developing countries like Ethiopia.

I have observed list of programmes, benefits, scholarship values and inclusions, availability of literature that support for the course, all the course given and schedule, semester arrangement, and other information from the website displayed. After examining the details of each critically I would like to apply for Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology – Research Master’s degree programme.

I have made my undergraduate degree in Nursing. During my under graduate study, I have attend main courses such as Medical-Surgical Nursing (I, II, III) by M.Sc lecturer, Gynecology and Obstetrics Nursing (I, II) by M.Sc. lecturer, Sexual and Reproductive Health by Assistant Professor, Human Anatomy (I,II) by Doctor, Human Physiology(I,II) by doctor from India, Epidemiology by MPH lecturer from Norway University, Human Nutrition in Health and Illness by lecturer, Biochemistry by lecturer from Uganda, Research methodology by MPH lecturer, Health Education by MPH lecturer, Biostatistics by MPH lecturer, Community Health Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing by M.Sc lecturer and supporting courses such as, Health assessment, introduction to computer science, e.t.c. At the end of my undergraduate degree program, I defend my final graduation thesis on Sexually Transmitted Diseases in adolescence. Additionally my postgraduate studies on Adult Health Nursing and thesis on Prevalence and Determinants of Depression among type 2 diabetic out patients will serve as a ground for the programme that I preferred.

An increased public awareness of health has made health as a special consideration in the day to day life. This Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology – Research Master’s degree study is a main tool for conducting research and providing evidence based care for the victims in order to improve the betterments of public health.

Knowledge, attitude, culture, norm, belief, lifestyle, socioeconomic status, e.t.c affects the pattern of health in world population. This ends up with related social, psychological, physiological, e.t.c. problem in the population. The effects of these all factors also vary in strength from poor country (developing country) to rich country (developed country). Since medical and psychosocial issues are very essential with significant effect in developing countries it needs highly specialized or trained man power to deal with it.
Therefore, so as to design any of the strategies for the aforementioned problems caused by different factors demanding to specialize the right and appropriate course is mandatory. Therefore my aspiration to join Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology – Research Master’s degree programme is at least to minimize the problems or factors that contribute for alteration of different patterns of health.

Besides, since 2002/3 the government of Ethiopia opened new universities so as to increase the number of well-educated individuals by giving high percentage of students in health science field in comparison with other field. Not only the universities but also different non-governmental organizations need well-equipped health professionals that will perform or design strategies or evaluate and monitor the activities including research. But for example, in our university, because it is new that opened in 2006/7, no one has specialized in Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology, though research and epidemiology courses are being given to our students with first degree instructor/general practitioners and conduct research without any specialization. Imagine would it be effective? Is it possible to run the department with such circumstances? I do not suppose so! So who will fulfill this gap or tackle such and similar problems unless others and I have got a chance of upgrading?

One of my utmost long-term goals was to pursue successful academic career as a prominent health scholar in areas of Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology and I believe that the sole reason for pursuing a more advanced education is to approach with the moment of facing a new challenge and the need to surmount it. Learning this masters program will enable me to have a trust and confidence on my self, to be hard-worker, and enthusiastic in approaching and solving problems. More over the course will help me to become sharp-minded and pleasant to acquire new skills, and theories. My interest to follow this masters course emanates from the fact that Conducting Postgraduate studies and research within this Program would improve and increase my knowledge and practical experience, especially because I have very little research possibilities in my country. In addition, developing postgraduate thesis and learning from professors with great experience in theory and practice will improve my professional ability and skill of research.

It is my life ambition to do scientific research because I believe that scientific research and its methods provide an unrivaled framework in which the problems of the physical world can be determined and solutions to them be found. In addition, discovering the implied meanings behind the scientific theories always encourages me to think and research the subject matter. I believe that the quality of life can’t be improved with possession, but through contribution. In this context, my effort to contribute to the academic literature shall be the greatest satisfaction in my life.
