Teaching Statements

Teaching Statement 1

Since I obtained my bachelor degree in 2009, I was involved in teaching and supervising bachelor and master degree nursing students for six years at Debre Berhan University, Debre Berhan, Ethiopia. At the same time, I have received several trainings, such as effective teaching skills, active learning and student’s class performance assessment. I embrace every teaching opportunity that I can find, and I have worked enthusiastically and effectively with students at a variety of levels. I believe in keeping all my courses and tutoring sessions student-centered, and so I focus on creating a dialogue with the students and to help them discover answers for themselves. In 2014, I receive ‘best lecturer of the year’ award for outstanding performance in the Nursing department at Debre Berhan University. I was selected to lead College of Health Science Education Development Center (HSEDC), which mainly working on ensuring the quality of education in Health Science college. The position helped me to gain experience in developing course syllabus, laboratory skill guideline and curriculum, and managing fixed obligation grant. I enjoyed planning and executing courses, working in a group with other faculty members and classroom management.

During my Ph.D. study at the University of Groningen, I took ‘start to teach’ training and participated in assisting medical statistics, and applied statistics and epidemiology computer lab classes. I also supervise one research master student and assist data analysis for one Ph.D. student. Taken together, my teaching and my recent research experience—which has included providing clinical courses for bachelor students, supervising research projects of bachelor and master students, and providing clinical simulation training for faculty members—have primed me to create and teach inspiring clinical and methodological/epidemiological courses.

As a junior teacher and researcher who is committed to public service and working with members of diverse populations, I would look forward to the opportunity to work with colleagues and students to inspire the next generation, and serving the University of Groningen community.
